Well, it’s going to be a pretty miserable Christmas for me, and I’m sure for others too. I figured it would be a good idea to have some place on Lemmy (I checked the Christmas instance and the last post was 2 years ago…) where those at a loose end could at least have each other for company throughout the Christmas period. Any ideas on how to make this happen appreciated!

I did Christmas alone before and if you have a Chinatown near you I recommend going because it’s like Christmas doesn’t even exist. It’ll be full of Asian and Jewish people and you can eat some good food and pretend it’s any other day.

For the past 4 Christmases, I’ve gone snowboarding by myself. I love it. Snowboarding is my favorite activity and ski resorts are practically empty on Christmas Day.
If I have some social energy, I’ll chat with randos on the lift or at the hotel hot tub afterwards. Or if I feel like taking a break from humanity, I won’t speak a word the entire day. Both can be fun. Just following whatever my feelings are that day.
I’m usually alone for more years than not at Christmas. Also Thanksgiving. Halloween alot. I’m single for every Valentine’s Day. I’ve got nowhere to go for New Year’s Eve since I quit drinking. Basically every holiday.
I sometimes wonder how long it will take for people to notice that I’m dead after I pass. I wonder who will pay for the funeral.

i’m chronically suicidal, but during a particularly extra bad time in my life i asked multiple people just to check in on me daily to see if i was alive so that my cat wouldn’t starve or be without water. i didn’t have the energy to talk so i wasn’t asking for a conversation. just making sure i was alive.
i had an (obviously failed) attempt.
a week passed after that with no one checking in on me.
I had/have the same thoughts. IANAL but I think if no one claims your corpse, the government pays for its disposal.
Let’s just get through Christmas before tackling the other stuff in your post. One depressing lump of crap at a time! 🍻

I’m Asian so living with family is the norm… (I’m a young adult, think lile college age, but I’m dealing with depression so college plans are on pause)
But idk, I remember I had fun times with my mother when I was just a kid. Now… idk…
So much depression from both trauma within the family, and trauma from outside (school… xenophobia/racism and bullying, and also political instability)
I’m not alone, but I’m lonely.
I have a older brother, but something happened years ago and we don’t vibe anymore. (sibling abuse, fighting…)
I don’t really have friends, I’m not good at keeping friends… so… yeah…

I have a cat, but I’m not a good owner, so my cat is kinda indifferent towards me, it’s my fault for not being in a good enough mental state to play with my cat. I kinda messed up this timeline, I wish I could go back to re-do it.
A cat’s mental state leans towards indifference naturally, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad owner. If it doesn’t mind being around you, and it can be relaxed in the same room, that’s a good sign it considers you a friend. Although if you can sometimes muster up a few minutes of play, that might be good for both of you.
I love spending Christmas alone when it’s my choice… and I have food and not being crushed with stress from all directions, and not living in a street full crazy people who won’t let me have any peace in my own home. It’s very different when you’ve been treated like shit all year, then have a super shitty Christmas lined up.
I spent a Christmas alone once and absolutely loved it. It was nice to have some “me” time without having to deal with the Hoi Polloi.
How comes you’re going to be alone this year? Is there anything fun you can get up to on the day? (hobby or something?) if possible and appropriate try and have as much “fun” as possible; whether if it’s relaxing and having a bath or reading a book with some tea.
Cat pics etc can be the presents haha.

By choice. I loathe traveling around holidays due to larger crowds (and weather can be shit this time of year) so I just stay home. Having arguably the biggest holiday during a time of year that frequently gets bad weather was not a big brain move. I guess it works well for the southern hemisphere though.
I’m non-religious, so the holiday just means some time off work.

I have my parents thankfully. I wish I had my girlfriend but she was forced to leave the country because her visa expired and she couldn’t find a job which paid at least £41,000
I don’t do christmas so i’m always alone. Lunar new year though, i’m thinking of hiding.
Mom is suffering from shrinking family syndrome (people keep dying) and so she wants everyone home for Christmas, but TBH, I’m not confident either my wife or myself will be fit to travel by then so… 🤷♂️
