lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What kinda restaurant is your favorite to eat out at, and what's your go-to order there?4·3 days agoVietnamese.
Almost always order the Phở Dặc Biệt. Not sure what it means but it seems to be the deluxe or variety version of pho. Always tasty, and no stomach ache - which is the inevitable result of fast food in my case.

Would you say that's accurate?1·4 days agoMaybe it depends on the workplace, but i would say no. Everyone in my office is pretty chill and there are no exclusive cliques; there are friend groups but they are much more permeable. Unlike my high school friends, I rarely see my colleagues after work. The people are also more homogeneous- in high school you’re lumped in with a bunch of kids from all different backgrounds: some are headed to college, others to jail, etc. At the office, everyone but the support staff might have advanced degrees (for example). The policy on harassment also makes bullying a very dangerous proposition- way stricter than any school i attended.

People who write good documentation never know how much they are appreciated.

I agree with you up to a point, but not all religions are the same. I don’t see any Baha’i terrorists out there. Not even all Christian denominations are the same. The whackadoos are attracted to some religions more than others, and some religions foster crazy shit more than others.
That being said, I don’t want anything to do with American Evangelical Christianity. From what I’ve seen, that shit is right up there with the worst of nutjob religions.
lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there anything you're into that no one or basically nobody is into?6·16 days agoI know there are others out there, but I sometimes feel like I am the only person under 50 who loves opera. I have 2 streaming services that I mostly use for watching opera.
I honestly feel like many people would like opera if they gave it a chance. Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen is a cross between Lord of the Rings and The Avengers, but without the 30-min CGI fights (no disrespect to those who like fight scenes, but i get bored). My son and I love Mozart’s The Magic Flute; my wife’s favourite is Bizet’s Carmen.

I think many Americans are ready to rally around someone mounting a serious opposition to Trump, but no one has stepped up so far. I love Bernie and i believe he is important to the movement, but they need a young, charismatic, inspiring leader to start getting very loud about the real situation in the US. It will be an uphill battle because the media have been captured by people either cowed by or sympathetic to Trump. Maybe Lemmy can be the platform for DS in the states. Legacy media has failed (with maybe 1-2 exceptions).
lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•There’s a growing number of Americans who think violence might be necessary to get the country back on track482·18 days agoThis is just people waking up to reality. Trump has the White House, the senate, the House of Representatives, and the courts. He controls the military and has already begun deployment to “democratic” cities. His buddy in Texas is redistricting to help him consolidate power, and I am sure Abbot is not the only one. Every move Trump makes is designed to cripple opposition to his regime. Republican states are purging voter rolls and enacting bullshit laws designed to disenfranchise people of colour.
Milquetoast democrats have made only the most pathetic gestures of opposition to Trump. The first genuine thing Trump ever said was when he expressed surprise yesterday at how little resistance he has faced from the left. Republicans were right about one thing: the American left is a bunch of pussies.
If more Americans think political violence is the only way out of the mess Americans made, it’s probably because they are starting to develop a vague but accurate understanding of what is happening in their country.

There is too much critical infrastructure that is run by the government. The civil service, no matter how much some people deride it, is the main difference between a functional country and somewhere like Somalia. Somalia should be a republican’s wet dream, right? Entrepreneurs can exploit any resources they want, they have no labour board, no safety standards, no corporate income tax. And yet, Somalia has so far failed to overtake the USA as a paragon of innovation and productivity. If anyone wants to see what a country with small government really looks like, they need only look at Somalia.

lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Germany news: Far-right AfD loses mayoral runoffs in NRWEnglish76·20 days agoIt’s partly because of how the German elections work. They are a multi-party system and have runoffs when no one wins more than 50% of the vote. The AfD might be the top polling party with only, say, 30%. They win the first round of elections because the opposition is split between many parties, but in the runoff, voters must choose between AfD and the second most popular party. Voters who don’t like the AfD can coalesce to elect the second party, regardless of how they voted in round 1.

If I wanted AI I could go to some shit website and use it. Just like I don’t want a “useful free” toilet in my car, I don’t want brain-damaging spyware in my notepad.
For a decade, I have been begging anyone who will listen to believe Trump et al. whenever they threaten someone. I swear that the only time Trump tells the truth is when he promises violence, retribution, or lawbreaking.
