If it makes him feel better, I’d probably place a rather larger share of blame on El Presidente and friends in the Kremlin than the Russian military.

    • No warning to military, so no time to address problems.

    • Not telling vast bulk of military what was going on until actually en route. No psychological prep. Just “so, this training exercise doesn’t actually exist and we’re invading Ukraine. Because satanists. The shooting starts in about 30 minutes.”

    • Relying on a partially-manned army designed around the expectation of advance notice and mobilization while providing neither.

    • Not mobilizing immediately when things went to shit due to concern over domestic political risk.

    • Mis-calling the international situation when it really, really mattered.

    • Probably the reason for Gerasimov’s offensive.

    • Probably not informing the financial people about the Glorious Recreation Of Imperial Russia War so that they’d move foreign exchange reserves; this caused Russia to start on said war with a war chest some $300 billion smaller than expected.

    • Underestimating Ukrainian willingness to fight. Yeah, Russia wasn’t the only one to do that, but Russia was the one choosing to bet the farm on that assessment.
