This just makes me sad because I’m too old now. It’s bad to judge a book by its cover, but they all just look so… Shonen. Teen highschool romance, teen battle anime, etc. I’ve become so jaded wrt all the teen protagonist Shonen tropes.

At least frieren is at the top 😌

I sympathize with this view as well. Romances in anime/manga are especially frustrating to me because all the characters tend to act in very childish ways and not act their age. If you are in high school, it shouldn’t be heart-attack inducing to have a member of the opposite sex talk to you or share a textbook or whatever. The extra frustrating part is that these childish behaviors are not just limited to teens, but fully grown adults tend to act the exact same way in a lot of anime/manga; just swap high school for an office or izakaya. I can deal with it easier if the show leans more on the comedy side of a romcom, but the more straight romances tend to be tough to bear (with a couple exceptions).

Absolutely. Generally with Shonen, protagonists tend to be idiots, which is frustrating.

I’ve started reading Korean manhwa mostly now, because their protagonists tend to be competent adults.

I’ve only enjoyed a few romance titles, and they’re all older now so I don’t know if they still hold up. My fav was Lovely Complex. They actually acted like people their age might act, with a little leeway for comedic overreacting.

Idk if you would consider a Silent Voice to be a romance, but that manga was god tier.

      • #10 is Not Shonen

I’m older too, and don’t enjoy cliched Shonen, school, romance. But there’s a lot more than 10 titles per season it’s just first week. I’ve already had more than 10 anime than I’m going to follow till next week at least.

To be clear, I’m ok with romance and even school romance to an extent (lovely complex was great). But almost everything that gets an anime with a budget is so formulaic.

I’ll take a look at #10 thought, a few people have mentioned it’s different. It’s giving “I Reincarnated into an otome game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags”

I get ya, I’m on the older side too, and kinda tired of seeing the same shit repeated over and over again. But I will say I am REALLY enjoying Frieren so far. It seems to be 100% for the older crowd. It’s a pure fantasy anime, but it’s much slower and more emotional. If you give it a shot, note that the first 4 eps are meant to be viewed as a set. This week’s was technically ep 5 even though it’s the second time it aired.

I’m already all caught up on the frieren manga, so I’ll probably just keep reading the manga rather than watch the anime, but I agree it’s excellent.

I haven’t heard of most of the rest of these though.

The adaptation is fantastic btw. I’m reading the manga as well and the show has really elevated the story in my opinion. Parts in the manga that had me thinking, “huh, that’s a bit depressing” had me actually fighting back tears in the anime.

I’m starting to hit that same point, but Eminence in Shadow is a blast once you realize it’s parodying the isekai genre in the same way that Cabin in the Woods parodied horror movies.

While I do often feel that way too, it needs to be pointed out that Anime Corner is a bit of a niche site and this reflects only the opinions of 5408 people. Their polls are known to have a bit wack results at times. If you look at other sites, MAL for example has had 25k people rate the list’s top entry, Sousou no Frieren. If you want to truly gauge something’s popularity, it’s worth looking at more than just one site.
