Union says operating company is ‘heading for disaster’ with budget based on unrealistic future visitor numbers
The Eiffel Tower was closed to the public on Wednesday after staff went on strike on the 100th anniversary of the death of its creator, Gustave Eiffel.
Disappointed tourists who had booked tickets to access the 134-year-old monument were told it was shut and they would be contacted by email.
The powerful CGT union said the industrial action taking place ahead of contract negotiations with City Hall, which owns the tower, was in protest over “the current way it is managed”.
Union leaders claim the operating company, SETE, is “heading for disaster” because its business model is “too ambitious and unsustainable” and based on an over-optimistic estimate of future revenue from ticket sales and an underestimation of spiralling maintenance and repair costs.
Hahahaha nothing says “Français” like going on strike during an important event.
We should learn something from them, mostly that it’s very effective
The guillotines?
Yes, I agree, but sometimes it’s a bit over the top.
So is the repression of labour.
Do something to remember and they won’t likely forget.
Or maybe a bit… Off the top?
Just one head, nothing big
Wait for the Paris Olympics this year!
Oh man I know! LOL
Oh good God. I don’t follow the Olympics close enough to know where they are going to bed held, I didn’t realize it was gonna be in Paris. They’re gonna strike everywhere! Lol
Is anyone else okay if we just stop doing them? Seems like we as a species can’t do it very well.
Not the people in charge of the IOC getting showered with gifts and bribes to decide where to hold it.
Never apologize for a strike, mes amis. Solidarité pour toujours.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The powerful CGT union said the industrial action taking place ahead of contract negotiations with City Hall, which owns the tower, was in protest over “the current way it is managed”.
Union leaders claim the operating company, SETE, is “heading for disaster” because its business model is “too ambitious and unsustainable” and based on an over-optimistic estimate of future revenue from ticket sales and an underestimation of spiralling maintenance and repair costs.
A light and sound show, overseen by a DJ and featuring artistic music and dance performances, to be broadcast from the first floor of the tower as well as on social media and television to mark the centenary of Eiffel’s death on Wednesday evening was pre-recorded and was not affected by the strike, SETE said.
A visionary entrepreneur and brilliant structural engineer, he had just finished building an iron and steel skeleton for the Statue of Liberty in New York with Eugène Viollet-le-Duc of Notre Dame Cathedral spire fame when approached to create a symbol of French industrial savoir-faire for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
Some, including the writers Guy de Maupassant and Alexandre Dumas the younger, could not wait to see it go, describing it as “useless and monstrous” and an affront to “French taste” even before the foundations had been laid.
City officials decided to spare what became known as the Dame de Fer (Iron Lady) after realising the tower, then the tallest building in the world, could be used as a radiotelegraph and weather station.
The original article contains 465 words, the summary contains 249 words. Saved 46%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
I saw a movie with a floating pyramid thing full of aliens above the Eiffle Tower and it really bugs me because I can’t remember the name of it.
Kung Pow?
Stinky pits and all baby!
Only “movie” I can think of with a pyramid thing is Stargate. But it’s need to be one of the tv series episodes or later direct to DVD movies that wrapped up the series. Like Stargate continuum, cause the Stargate: Ark of truth, had different bad guys.
