if you’re looking for an original distro, you should try void. it’s super lightweight. i used to keep away from gentoo because it was a source only distro, i would otherwise go fulltime on it, but now that it also has binary compatibility you should check that out, too.

as for wm, i love wayfire as a floating wm, and sway as a tiling wm.

people are so naive, agin and again. if anyone thinks this is anything other than facebook trying to kill the alternatives, they should look at the history of gtalk/xmpp.

mastodon is a viable alternative to twitter, and this means that anyone can go: “there can be other alternatives”. like reddit/lemmy, instagram/pixelfed, youtube/peertube, twitch/owncast, etc. and this is not good for business.

zathura is amazingly lightweight and does the job right. i even use that on my phone (which is not that powerful).

i have an idol3 from 2016 and even that has all the phone capabilities (except the camera) and it’s not listed as a community grade. you would be surprised at how many phones are working fully. and with sxmo/swmo every phone ever has a chance to be a daily driver.

i remember a time when the thing blocking linux migration was audio calling on msn messenger. it got solved but nobody cared. these things take time to go over the tipping point. hardly anybody used android when it first came out, symbian was all the hype.

i have a poco f1 and alcatel idol3. both are ready for daily driving. i think idol3 is a little better than the pinephone despite being a 2016 phone, and poco is just amazing performance-wise. i have microg on poco and pmos on idol3, trying to migrate my whole workflow. apart from camera, everything’s working quite smoothly.

i have a t420 and running up-to-date void linux perfectly fine.

you can’t get a sim card anonymously here, and i believe that’s the situation in other places. and even individuals selling their phones make some ownership transfer papers.

it’s very hard to stay anonymous on mobile. our best bet is still desktop/laptop.

sometimes that’s right, but other times it fires back. like in autodesk software, it turns into a money making machine. because they’re the industry standard for more than a decade now, they just pump out new version every year with barely any changes and deliberately not forward compatible. so you just pay more every month, because everything is subscription based now.

• this is 100% valid. even on wayland it’s working great.
• it took like 3 days to migrate my whole workflow to libreoffice. it’s definitely doable for 95% of ms office users but when you’re in a big company it gets tricky. formulas work a little bit different so you have to consider that. libreoffice is case sensitive, ms office is not.
• this is again mostly a compatibility with other parties issue. and from what i understand photoshop has a lot of third party addons that would definitely be cumbursome to migrate.
• i have to use windows at work and it drives me crazy. constant notifications for mundane stuff, no package manager, no sane way to keep apps up-to-date, commandline is shit.
• even freebsd was better at handling my thinkpad. i have a wifi dongle, on linux it just works, on windows i have to install an xp app to be able to use that.
