Are you a middle age straight man?
Are you a middle age straight man?
I’m doing my part!
Agreed, there are lots of instances, and that may be one thing that allows Lemmy to actually have space for different political leanings. As I understand, conservative circles are not very large here, but that can change, and smaller communities generally are healthier. Check those out and recruit your pals- be the change you want to see in the world!
To me I see this as a classic struggle many men have in a patriarchal society. Op is constantly wanting to be “manly” through having sex, taking a “manly” job that doesn’t fit with their true self, and feels in order to be a full human they need to be extraverted and with that usually comes a domination mindset.
A great podcast for the lads here who are struggling with that is the “Man Enough” podcast. I felt so seen by it and moments where I was in tears.
Men find themselves in an awkward position of being both the victim and perpetrator of a patriarchal society.
I remember the way I felt when the railroad strike first ended- it was a smack in the face to the railroad union. He sided against the protesters and ended the protest without giving them what they wanted- sick time off. I thought “dang, Biden is just another in a long line of anti-labor presidents”.
That was big news posted loud and everywhere.
And then only a few months later, and with little fanfare, The Biden administration pressured rail companies to give that sick leave.
Biden (actually Pete Buttigeig) prioritized preventing an immediate logistics crisis over workering conditions, but he didn’t just let it slide off his table. Now we don’t have a logistics crisis and the railroad union has more sick leave. Absolute win.
We killed god and replaced it with Google.
I mean I do agree with the points that it would be torture for Trump to have to choose between being the focus of a witch hunt or the pitiful disgraced president who only was saved by the kindness of his opponent. When I heard Biden is “throwing down the gauntlet” to debate Trump again, I let out the biggest groan. If I were him I wouldn’t give Trump a platform to look like an equal. I know it feels good to want to beat the living shit out of Trump, but I understand from a political perspective that it might not be the best strategy to win in 2024. I liked it better when Biden was acting senile and not childish.
After that it’s hard not to see the negative consequences of pardoning Trump. There should be a message to other politicians that we are not afraid to send you to jail.
They’ll figure out another way to get their slaves :/
As a Chicagoan, I can’t wait for the day we pull that god awful name off that building like a Saddam Hussein statue.
Oh yeah I’ve had that conversation over and over. I’m well aware of the reality of a profession in music, but I also have realized in the 10 years I spent in corporate America that I can’t live that life.
Someone said “don’t get a career in the arts until you’ve exhausted all other options”. It was annoying to have to constantly convince my mom that I was deeply unhappy in those roles, but she’s come around a bit more especially because I’m actually finding success following my passion.
It’s a rough road for sure, but I’ve found avoiding unhappiness is not the road to happiness.
While I had a lot of things that made me angry at my mom in my early 20s, I realized she did this with me with my music. Sometimes she still would suggest I go into sales and get a big boy job and get down on me for my choices, but I also know on her good days she was super supportive. The last panel is word for word what she would say.
Oh absolutely. I remember when rent prices dropped in the deep pandemic- absolutely newsworthy.

Oooooh I see the misunderstanding.
When I said “right wing cancel culture” I meant how the right wing cancels people. So the right cancels people through legal means while the left cancels people through social means.
What you said is a perfect example of what I mean.
Exactly. Historically the left cancel culture has been in the private sector, which is protected. A company can fire you for saying racist shit, and you can be shunned by your community as they are individuals exercising their right to shun.
Right wing cancel culture exists in Congress and local governments, where they pass laws to silence teachers, make it illegal for trans people to exist, and send the national guard to beat up protesters.
This is an instance where a left wing group may experience the other side of the former.
Edit:
It seems I didn’t communicate my idea clearly and people think the exact opposite of what I meant. I meant left wing folks tend to cancel people through social means, like when no one wants to see a film with Kevin Spacey, whereas the right wing folks cancel people legally, like how you can’t be a communist in office or it’s illegal for an atheist to hold office in 7 states.
My last statement is how students having trouble getting a job is part of a “social canceling”.
I was super confused as to why I was getting down voted since I was trying to agree with what was being said and add to the conversation.
The argument I saw for this was that a president shouldn’t have to second guess every action they take while in office. That if they are held liable for everything they do, they may be paralyzed to make changes to the government.
I kinda thought that was kinda what the founders wanted to happen…
